Though typically about two inches taller now than 140 years ago, today’s people—especially those born tofamilies who have lived in the U.S. for many generations—apparently reached their limit in the early 1960s.【2008年Text 3】尽管一般来说,现在美国人的身高比140年前高了约两英寸,如今的美国人似乎在20世纪60年代早期就已达到了身高极限,尤其是那些出生于在美国生活了好几代的家庭的美国人。

Theirs was a seriousbusiness, and even those reviewers who wore theirlearning lightly, like George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Newman, could be trusted to know what they wereabout. (介词短语like George Bernard Shawand Ernest Newman为插入语,给出了those reviewers的具体例子)

Says Korn/Ferry seniorpartner Dennis Carey: “I can’t think of asingle search I’ve done where a board has not instructed me to look at sittingCEOs first.”

Adding to a woman’s increased dose of stress chemicals, are her increased “opportunities” for stress.【2008年Text 1】女性承受越来越多的压力的机会使她们因压力而产生的化学物质不断增加。(谓语部分are adding to中的现在分词短语adding to置于句首构成倒装,正常语序为:her increased “opportunities” for stress are adding to...,此处倒装主要是为了使句子与上下文衔接得更紧密)

Only when humanity began to get its food in a more productive way was there time for other things.【2009年Text 3】只有当人类能够更有效率地获取食物后,他们才有时间去考虑其他事情。(only修饰副词、介词或者状语从句并且位于句首时,主句要部分倒装,本句的正常语序为:there was time for other things only when...)

According to the standard history of American philosophy, nowhereelse in colonial Americawas “somuch importance attached to intellectual pursuits.”【2009年Text 4】据美国标准哲学史的记载,在殖民时期的美国,其他任何地方都不及新英格兰“如此重视对知识的追求”。(具有否定或者半否定意义的词置于句首时,句子应部分倒装,本句的正常语序为:...so much importance was attached to... nowhere else in ...)

Besides the ninety or so learned ministers who came to Massachusettschurches in the decade after 1629, therewere political leaders like John Winthrop, an educated gentleman, lawyer, and official of the Crown before he journeyed to Boston.【2009年Text 4】除了在1629年之后的十年间来到马萨诸塞教会的约90位学识渊博的牧师外,还有像约翰·温思罗普一样的政治领袖。

As a linguist, heacknowledges that all varieties of human language, including non-standardones like Black English, can be powerfully expressive—there exists no language ordialect in the world that cannot convey complex ideas.【2005年Text 4】作为语言学家,麦克沃特认为各种人类语言,包括像黑人英语这样的非标准语言,都具有强大的表现力——世界上没有表达不了复杂思想的语言或者方言。

其构成形式为:It + be...that/who。

Yet it is precisely thesenon-celebrity influentials who, according to the two-step-flowtheory,are supposed to drive socialepidemics, by influencing their friends and colleagues directly.【2010年Text 3】然而,根据“二级传播”理论的观点,恰恰应该是这些不是名人但具有影响力的人,通过直接影响他们的朋友及同事来推动社会流行的发展。

  (3)with结构

Not long ago, with the country entering a recession and Japan atits pre-bubble peak, the U.S.workforce was derided as poorly educated and one of the primary causes ofthe poor U.S. economic performance.【2009年Text 3】不久前,当美国经济进入衰退期,日本经济却正处在泡沫破裂前的繁荣期,人们嘲讽美国的劳动力受教育程度低,并认为这是美国经济低迷的主要原因之一。

But particularly when (today’s social indices are) viewed against America’s turbulentpast, today’s social indices hardlysuggest a dark and deteriorating social environment.【2006年Text 1】但如今的社会几乎没有显示出社会环境黑暗和每况愈下的迹象,尤其是当与美国动荡的过去相比时更是如此。(when和viewed之间省略了从句的主语和be动词today’s social indices are)

We are fortunate that it is, because building new educational systems there andputting enough people through them to improve economic performance wouldrequire two or three generations.

  (5)the... the...结构

  the...the...

In fact, the more new things we try—the more we step outside ourcomfort zone—the moreinherentlycreative we become, both in theworkplace and in our personal lives.【2009年Text 1】实际上,无论是在职场上还是在个人生活中,我们尝试的新事物越多,我们离习惯的舒适区域越远,我们的内在创造力就会变得越大。
