Many people now keep animals as pets. Numerous people have cats and dogsin their houses. Other people like fish, caged birds, tortoises and evensnakes, monkeys or lions. Millions of dollars and much time are spent everyyear on pet food, equipment, taming and medical treatment.

Of course, there are some people who do not look after their pets properlyor are even cruel to them. For this reason a royal society was created in 1824in Britain to prevent cruel treatment of animals.

In contrast to the love of pets is the fact that blood sports still existin most countries. People go hunting foxes, elephants, pandas, ducks, rabbits, and other animals, or go fishing, not because they need the meat to eat, butjust for pleasure. In some countries, blood sports like bull fighting and cockfighting are common and hunting rare animals for commercial purposes hasbrought about an even more serious problem in the protection of the ecosystem.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shypeople are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concernedwith their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantlyoccurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do theylike me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affectpeople. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way heor she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on allareas of their lives.

Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easilyinfluenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the rightthing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms theirfeelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased bycompliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make mefeel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is ahealthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in buildingself-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, itis important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths.
